Position description

The Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine serves as a central pillar for the School of Medicine and UC Davis Health, providing high quality anesthesia and pain services alongside a commitment to medical education, training and research. The Department is home to approximately 70 anesthesiologists and pain medicine specialists who are accompanied by over 55 nurse anesthetists, covering seven specialty areas. The Department offers comprehensive training to residents, fellows and medical students and is currently building upon its scholarly achievements.

Reporting to the Dean, UC Davis School of Medicine, the Chair will be expected to create a strategic plan that focuses on expansion of the clinical enterprise, fosters growth and stabilization and advances program building for medical training and research. The Chair will understand and foster an academic environment that promotes the advancement of faculty and an atmosphere of community, collaboration, diversity, equity, and inclusion. They will embrace and progress the educational mission for medical and graduate students, residents, fellows, faculty and staff while ensuring and maintaining a commitment to research and scholarship.

The Chair will be a passionate and forward-thinking leader committed to recruiting and retaining outstanding academic leaders and improving the mechanisms of care delivery. The successful candidate will possess outstanding interpersonal and communication skills with a demonstrated ability to recruit, promote the growth of others, inspire, manage and collaborate. The Chair also must demonstrate an ability to working within a complex academic environment and collaborate with other leaders across the School of Medicine and UC Davis Health. This leader will set forth uncompromising standards of professionalism and an ability to take a larger institutional view, which is integral to the Department's and the Health System's success. Candidates must possess an M.D. or equivalent degree and board certification in Anesthesiology and warrant qualification for appointment to Associate Professor or Professor at the School of Medicine.

The Chair will provide strategic and tactical leadership for all aspects of the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine within the School of Medicine - including corresponding anesthesia services across UC Davis Health. The Chair will work collaboratively with the leaders of the School of Medicine and Health System to build and recruit academic anesthesiologists to support clinical program development and research while ensuring excellence in teaching.

Reporting to the Dean of the School of Medicine, the Chair is responsible for residency programs, fellowships and undergraduate medical education activities, the department's research portfolio and the department's clinical activities, including the delivery of high quality and cost-effective care.

The successful Chair of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine candidate:
▪ Develops, maintains, and expands high quality clinical anesthesiology services and programs across UC Davis Health, such that the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine is recognized as a premier provider of services in the region.
▪ Provides leadership that promotes professional development of faculty members and attracts highly motivated and exceptional faculty, staff and trainees to the Department. Ensures the Department is recruiting the best and most diverse academic faculty and staff to meet its strategic goals.
▪ Recognizes the triumvirate unit of perioperative care that includes nurses/advanced practice professionals, surgeons, and anesthesiologists to ensure the highest quality and safety for patients.
▪ Fosters a culture of interdisciplinary research through collaboration with affiliated departments and centers and expands an infrastructure that fosters research productivity.
▪ Coaches, mentors, and develops others to build internal capabilities and the talent that facilitates succession. Develops the next generation of physician and scientific leadership in the Department.
▪ Develops key institutional partnerships and strategic relationships and defines and pursues interdisciplinary clinical and research goals that align with the School of Medicine and Health System strategic goals.
▪ Oversees departmental budgeting and resource management, meet departmental financial goals and enact policies and processes which promote fiscal accountability and responsibility.
▪ As the educational leader of the department, ensures an excellent teaching program for the students, residents and fellows.
▪ Monitors and consistently works to improve clinical quality.
▪ Serves as a spokesperson and advocate for the Department, both in the University, across UC Davis Health, the UC System and in the community.
▪ Ensures compliance with Joint Commission, Federal and State accreditation requirements, as well as compliance with University and School of Medicine policies and procedures.
▪ Expectations and responsibilities as an Academic Senate faculty member include:
▪ Clinical service in the area of specialty, as applicable
▪ Teaches medical students, residents and fellows
▪ Conducts bench/clinical/translational research leading to peer-reviewed publication
▪ Success in obtaining extramural funding, as applicable to faculty series
▪ University and professional service
▪ Further expectations are determined by faculty series.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
▪ An M.D., M.D./Ph.D., or equivalent degrees from an accredited institution with board certification in Anesthesiology.
▪ Eligible for licensure in California.
▪ Candidates must possess qualifications for appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level at UC Davis School of Medicine.
▪ A distinguished academic and research record which merits appointment to a senior level faculty position at the University.
▪ National/international reputation as a respected and accomplished researcher, clinician and/or educator.
▪ Proven, substantial and progressive leadership achievement in an academic medical center.
▪ Evidence of an astute understanding of academic clinical practice and a deep commitment to clinical excellence based on a patient-centered model of care.
▪ Demonstrated understanding of finances in healthcare administration and academic medicine.
▪ Evidence of success in recruitment and developing a strong clinical program that recognizes and meets the needs of the various providers with whom the Department works, those of the learners that the Department educates and trains, as well as the patients the Department serves.
▪ Demonstrated leadership in promoting and advancing diversity, equity, and inclusivity efforts.
▪ Record of success in mentoring and developing faculty, students, and trainees, and supporting them in their academic, teaching and clinical endeavors.
▪ Track record as a creative and strategic thinker who can envision and manage for the future.
