POSITION SUMMARY

The Dean of Pre-Clinical Sciences provides oversight to the development, direction and coordination of all pre-medical sciences, medical education activities and academic administrative activities for the College of Medicine at American University of Antigua. The Dean will work closely with the Associate Deans and the Provost to further develop academic programming and strategies to achieve educational goals and objectives. The Dean will ensure that the recruitment and selection of qualified faculty meets the needs of the Academic Program. The Dean will supervise and direct Associate Deans and faculty to ensure that the curriculum meets the needs of our students and the institution. The Dean collaborates closely with the Vice President of Administration on administrative, health and safety issues on campus.

The position is based at the American University of Antigua (AUA) College of Medicine campus, located in the country of Antigua & Barbuda, and will require international travel as appropriate.

  JOB PURPOSE

  • Lead the faculty by providing strong academic, strategic, planning and operational leadership to the Faculty Executive Team and staff across the University to deliver an excellent student experience through the fusion of education, research and professional practice. Participate fully in the leadership of AUA as a member of the University’s Leadership Team working collaboratively with the University’s Executive Team and other senior colleagues to ensure the performance of the Faculty and University in line with the University’s mission, values and strategic plan.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Dean will be responsible for the education program in the pre-clinical years of medical student education.  In addition to other duties the Dean is responsible for the following:

Academic leadership of pre-clinical sciences Assessment and recruitment of faculty Curriculum development and implementation Supervision of all academic matters Development and introduction of new academic programs Development and introduction of new educational programs and teaching technology Promotion of faculty and student research Oversight of Pre-Clinical Science Education Enhancement Department Organization of national and international medical meetings and workshops Interaction with accrediting bodies and supervision of accrediting process Academic budget development University strategic planning

  • Oversee the Associate Deans and Faculty Serve as Dean of the Faculty and member of Senior Leadership team, ensuring the strategic development, performance and corporate management of the University in line with the strategic plan. Provide strong academic and strategic leadership and management to the faculty across all areas of activity; fusing excellent education, research and professional practice – to ensure a high performing academic culture and community. Ensure a strong and high performing Faculty Executive Team, who will individually and collectively take responsibility for ensuring a working environment, which promotes academic, professional and personal staff development in a manner that is consistent with, and gains widespread ownership of, the Faculty and University strategic plan and objectives. Ensure an excellent student experience and the development of initiatives to broaden the academic appeal and footprint of the Faculty, ensuring innovation and creativity underpin the student experience. Provide strong leadership to Faculty staff, promoting a culture of service excellence, managing resources effectively and driving change where necessary in order to build and promote the impact and reputation of the Faculty & University. Demonstrate a sustained contribution to education, research and professional practice within own discipline. Foster and develop research and professional practice capability to underpin effective delivery of education with particular attention to the quality of the student experience. Demonstrate sustained evidence of leadership of fusion within an academic/group team or portfolio area and through the mentorship of others. Lead and drive forward a Global Engagement activity for the Faculty to ensure delivery of Faculty objectives, in line with the University’s global engagement ambitions. Be an ambassador for the Faculty and University, both internally and externally. Any other duties as required.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

  • Significant experience in undergraduate medical education and academic medicine within the United States. A minimum of ten (10) years of experience in an administrative role such as Associate Dean or Department Chair.
  • Terminal Degree in Medicine.
