The Opportunity
  • A one-year program designed for physicians seeking to expand their knowledge of wilderness medicine and develop the skills required to help participate in, organize, and lead austere medical teams.
  • Learn the skills and logistics required to effectively lead search and rescue (SAR) medical operations and obtain extensive marine training with SCUBA diving certification, dive medicine training, and swift water rescue training.
  • Provide high-quality, evidence-based medical care to Riverside County through clincal ER shifts at RUHS.
  • Initiate and participate in research projects aimed at advancing the field of wilderness medicine.
  • Acquire and refine technical skills essential for wilderness medicine, including but not limited to advanced SCUBA certification, wilderness life support (AWLS), search and rescue operations, emergency navigation, and survival skills in various environments (e.g., mountain, desert, marine).
  • Serve as a mentor and role model for medical students and residents interested in wilderness medicine by providing guidance on career development, research opportunities, and skill enhancement.
  • The program participates in the Wilderness Medical Society match in the fall.

Required Experience and Competencies
  • Board-certified or eligible MD or DO degree with completion of an accredited Emergency Medicine residency.
  • Current California medical and DEA license.
  • Demonstrated interest and prior experience in wilderness medicine, outdoor activities, or related fields.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work and collaborate within a team in challenging and variable outdoor settings.
  • Previous teaching experience and a commitment to medical education.
  • Research experience, with a willingness to lead and contribute to research projects.

  • A 439-bed hospital with a Level II Trauma Center, Primary StrokeCenter, andFully Operating Paramedic Base Station.
  • A38-bed Emergency Departmentthatsees 100,000+ED patients annually.
  • AnEmergency Room with operational excellence (nation leading performance in quality programs and efficiency) with a Rapid Medical Examination (RME) process for rapid assessment (patients are seen within 15 minutes of arrival), a robust internal waiting room (no patients return to the lobby), and a Rapid Treatment Area (RTA) for lower acuity patients.
