Summary
Under the direct clinical supervision of the cardiothoracic surgery physicians, functions as a surgical first assistant for cardiac and thoracic procedures, performs vein harvest for bypass procedures, and assists the surgeons with pre and post operative care of patients. This may include, but is not limited to, coordinating and ordering pre-surgical testing, rounding on inpatients, and performing procedures such as thoracenteis and chest tube placements.
Education
Four years of formal training or education beyond the high school level (e.g., Bachelors Degree).
Completion of an accredited Physicians Assistant Certificate Program is required. Maintains required CME's.
Certification, Registration, and Licensure
Certification required: National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
Licensure required: Physicians Assistant in the State of NH.
Experience
Surgical experience preferred but not required, specifically in endoscopic vein harvest.

The employee is occasionally exposed to chemotherapeutic agents, electrical hazards - shock, moving mechanical parts, non-weather related heat or cold, radiation, and slippery surfaces.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

- Provides in-hospital patient care.
- Provides in-office patient care.
- Provides service call.
- Performs operating room service.
- Obtains patient health history and performs physical examination.
- Diagnoses acute and chronic medical problems within the scope of practice.
- Provides specialty care, acute and chronic management and patient education according to practice
standards. - Develops expertise and practice standards specific to specialty program.
- Prescribes and manages medications within the practice standards.
- Orders and interprets diagnostic tests.
