Job Description

Inova L.J. Murphy Children's Hospital is seeking a Congenital Heart Surgeon to join their team. The Congenital Heart Surgeon will work with the Medical Co-Director of the Inova L.J. Murphy Children’s Hospital Heart Center to lead all aspects of fetal, neonatal, pediatric and adult congenital cardiovascular care. This includes the sections of Pediatric Congenital Heart Surgery, Cardiac Anesthesia, Cardiovascular Critical Care, Cardiology, Adult Congenital Cardiology, Fetal Cardiology, Interventional Cardiology, Non-invasive Cardiology, and Electrophysiology and pediatric cardiac nursing.

Candidates must be diplomats of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery (or equivalent) and Congenital Heart Surgery Sub-specialty Certified with a track record and documentation of high quality safety and clinical outcomes across the breadth of complex congenital heart surgeries. The ideal candidate will have a strong record of clinical and academic leadership in neonatal and infant cardiac surgery, pediatric, and adult congenital cardiac surgery.

This role will coordinate across inpatient, emergency department, and outpatient care spaces to ensure all pediatric patients and adults with congenital heart disease are able to receive world-class health care, in accordance with Inova’s mission. The role will drive significant clinical practice and programmatic growth thereby also expanding opportunities for education and research.

As a teaching hospital, our leaders are expected to mentor early career faculty, active participation in departmental and interdisciplinary activities, research, and teaching of medical students, residents and fellows is expected.

This leader will directly report to the President of the Inova L.J. Murphy Children’s Hospital and Pediatric Service Line, and work closely with the President of the Heart and Vascular Service line, and other Division Chiefs and key organizational stakeholders to advance high level patient centered care across Inova.

  • Establish standards and metrics necessary to collaboratively drive clinical outcomes in safety, quality and patient experience in order to achieve our Inova goal to be the health care system of choice;
  • Lead the intentional development of a people-centered division, an environment of cultural respect and growth where contributions are recognized and rewarded, creating a truly great place to work;
  • Foster an environment of inclusiveness through mutual respect and assuming positive intent;
  • In coordination with Co-Director of the Heart Center and other Division and Section Chiefs, build and actuate care models that achieve a seamless system of care;
  • Contribute to the development of the Division, Hospital and Service Line through the definition and development of clinical capabilities;
  • Seek out, recognize, and contribute to the development of the next generation of clinical and administrative leaders;
  • In partnership with the Service Line Triad and Chair of Pediatrics ensure all regulatory, compliance and certification standards are met for the program.


  • Board Certified in Congenital Heart Surgery.
