Job Description
Inova Health System Department of Orthopedic Surgery is seeking a fellowship-trained, board-certified (or eligible) Spine surgeon to join our team for a full-time position in our Ashburn/Sterling Locations.

Inova Orthopedic Services leads the Northern Virginia and Washington, DC metro area in helping people with arthritis, orthopedic illness, trauma, or injury to regain their active lifestyles. Our four spine centers maintain Joint Commission Gold Seals for Spine Surgery.
The Department of Orthopedics and Sports Medicine has 25 physicians, 7 office locations, outpatient surgery centers and co-located therapy clinics and supports Inova’s five hospitals and large breadth of emergency and urgent care centers, outpatient services and destination institutes.
This opportunity requires Fellowship training, and the position provides an opportunity to join a robust Spine Program and practice in a complex and growing Health System.
Spine surgeons joining the Department must have an active interest in collaborative diagnosis and treatment of Spine-related disorders in the context of a multi-disciplinary Department and complex Health System. Candidates must have excellent interpersonal skills to communicate clearly and concisely with all levels of nursing, physicians, and administration.
Candidates must be Board Certified/Eligible. Competitive salary and benefit package offered.

Patient Care (inpatient, outpatient, consultative services):
- Provides direct hands-on care to patients within the limits of credentials granted by the Medical Staff of Inova Hospitals in recognition of advanced training and experience in this field.
- Provide quality surgical care for patients consulted during call coverage.
- Provide follow up care to patients treated during call coverage, patients referred to physician as otherwise provided or in the operation of the clinic.
- Development of patient management pathways and algorithms in collaboration with essential participants of patient care
- Development of strategies in collaboration with nursing, pharmacy, respiratory care, and others to reduce the cost of providing quality and effective care
- Development of strategies for outcome analysis and quality improvement for the critical care and surgical patient population as it applies to Orthopedics in collaboration with the quality resources management and essential participants of patient care.
Physician coverage and responsibilities:
- Serves as attending in accordance with a published schedule, with night call and weekend coverage.
Education:
- Acts as an enthusiastic and learned resource for educational activities for the Inova Health System related to Orthopedics.
- Takes a leading role in the training of Inova-affiliated medical education, including resident and PA education, and attendance at appropriate Inova academic conferences.
- Assists in the design and implementation of an effective program of in-service education for nursing and support personnel in the Department of Orthopedics and outpatient specialties related to the care of Orthopedic patients.
Quality Improvement
- Participates in regular quality improvement and cost saving activities in collaboration with other professional members of the health care team in the Department of Orthopedics
- In conjunction with the Department President, administration, and nursing staff, acts as a patient advocate in monitoring, tracking, assessing and evaluating quality of care
- Supports the case management concept to reach departmental LOS and patient satisfaction goals.
- Supporting development, implementation and monitoring of clinical pathways
- In collaboration with the Department of Orthopedics, creates and implement protocols and clinical pathways to decrease variances in care with the focus always on providing excellent patient care, deceasing LOS, increasing efficiencies and decreasing costs.
- Assists with developing quality monitors and conducting medical record review
Clinical Responsibilities
- Will cover Inova Health System Orthopedic inpatient and outpatient services as required by Department leadership
- Will act as a collegial team player and honor the consultant role for Orthopedic services
- Will help insure the appropriate implementation of Orthopedic Clinical Practice Guidelines
- Will assist in orienting and working with residents, APPs, and students
Budgetary Responsibility
- Appropriately allocates resources such as diagnostic tests and is a responsible steward of health care resources within the Department.
- Provides input for optimal organization and appropriate fiscal management within the developing Inova Physician Enterprise
Medical Staff Liaison
- The physician maintains communication with other interrelated medical and surgical services to facilitate cooperative interactions, appropriate standardization of equipment, documents, and practice to optimize patient care in the Department of Orthopedics.
Medical and Nursing Staff Support
- The physician provides consultation and educational support to residents and nursing staff (see education).
Ancillary Service Liaison
- The physician maintains a working relationship with the staff of ancillary services involved in patient care in the department, as well as the general units, (i.e. respiratory services, radiology, laboratory, pharmacy, OR/P ACU) to facilitate optimal delivery of services.
Other Duties

- Maintain a high level of interpersonal skills that allow effective communications with a variety of personnel, physicians, patients, patients’ families, staff, and the public.
- Participate in CME conferences whenever possible. Maintain knowledge base with participation in at least one general Orthopaedic and one subspecialty specific CME conference per year.

- Abides by the bylaws, rules and regulations of Inova Hospitals’ medical staff.
Physician Credentialing and Privileges
- Adheres to the Department of Orthopedics credentialing process.
