DEPARTMENT/DIVISION:
Department of Pathology, University of Pittsburgh, Division of Microbiology in the Section of Laboratory Medicine. All Divisions in Laboratory Medicine have a strong interest in service, research and education and serve the UPMC Health System comprised of over 40 hospitals and clinics.
JOB DUTIES: But not limited to:
-Direct the Division of Clinical Microbiology that includes 4 other clinical microbiologists.
-Work with the Executive Vice-Chair for Laboratory Medicine to provide medical direction to the clinical laboratories with the matrix of the Department and UPMC
-Provides technical directorship of the microbiology clinical laboratories to ensure regulatory compliance and quality patient test results within an integrated multi-hospital clinical microbiology service.
-Provide on call attending responsibilities including clinical consultations for physician and healthcare providers regarding test results and interpretations.
-Actively participate in Divisional educational activities
-Pursue basic/clinical/translational research
-Laboratory-based investigations and entrepreneurial efforts are desired and supportable based on prior accomplishments.
-Develops and delivers educational content for medical students, residents, fellows, and laboratory staff both within the formal Microbiology rotation, elective teaching, informal teaching, and mentoring settings.
-Infuses diversity, equity, and inclusion principles in their workstyle.
-Participates in trainee evaluations and candidate interviews.
QUALIFICATIONS:
-Experience working in a large hospital-based clinical microbiology laboratory that provides technical directorship in general and specialized microbiology, including cutting edge LDT and testing developments.
-Expertise in clinical laboratory quality management to ensure the total testing phase (pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases) is appropriate and standardized across the healthcare system.
-Expertise in Informatics and its clinical application in Pathology is a plus.
-Proven academic track record with publications is a must, history of/current holding of extramural funding is a definite plus.
-Must have a M.D. or Ph.D. with board certification in Clinical Microbiology or equivalent specialty.
-If M.D., Board certification or eligibility in clinical pathology by the American Board of Pathology
Eligible for medical licensure in Pennsylvania is required.
-Assistant Professor (1-5 years’ experience) Associate Professor (6-10 years’ experience)
SALARY and BENEFITS:
Academic rank, tenure and salary will be commensurate with experience. The individual will be a full-time faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, as well as a participant in the UPMC/UPP faculty practice plan.
If extramurally funded research program is present or to be developed, appropriate transition or seed funding, space and resources are available.
Distribution of efforts in Service, Research/Academics, and Teaching will be tailored to capabilities and expectations.
