Job Description

Palliative Care Medical Director

The Palliative Medicine & Comprehensive Care program at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus consists of an interdisciplinary team including 4 physicians, 3 nurse practitioners, 3 social workers, and a chaplain. Our comprehensive, expert team, provides specialty consultation throughout the 912 bed hospital campus, comprised of Inova Fairfax Hospital, Inova Heart and Vascular Institute, and Inova Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

We are seeking a full time Hospice and Palliative Medicine, board certified, physician to join our team in a leadership role. This position will provide clinical expertise and mentor-ship within our team, grow collaborative relationships with hospital departments to enhance and inform primary palliative care delivery. We are looking for a leader who desires to foster growth and meet the unique professional development needs of each team member.

Duties include 1) participation in daily IDT to optimize clinical integration, efficiency, and effectiveness of service delivery, 2) inpatient consultation, 3) assistance with educational oversight of rotating learners, 4) collaboration in system wide quality initiatives, 5) Collaborate with Hospice partners to insure appropriate transitions and 6) development and maintenance of partnerships in strategic arenas throughout the campus.

We aim to enhance the provision of palliative care by all service providers by incorporating PC specialists into the fabric of other service lines in the form of committee engagement, policy review and creation, and ongoing educational efforts. This integrated model is designed to enhance the care for patients with chronic, progressive, serious illness and end of life care. Palliative care improves health outcomes by providing effective, efficient care that is patient and family centered.

Strengths of the program Include: Critical support from institutional leadership based upon repeated demonstration of quality and financial outcomes, highly motivated and high functioning collaborative IDT, respect and rapport of palliative care across the hospital community, routine collection of operational data, strong grants department to assist with grant funding opportunities.

The Division of Palliative Care & Geriatrics is a part of the Medicine Service line for Inova. Qualifications include board certified in palliative medicine, board certification in primary specialty, with palliative medicine fellowship training preferred but not required. Requirements:

  • Board Certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine
  • At least 2 years’ experience in the practice of hospice and palliative medicine AND at least 5 years' experience in the practice of another primary specialty
  • At least 2 years’ experience in leadership role
  • High level of interpersonal skills that allows effective communications with a wide variety of clinicians, physicians, patients, affiliated institutions and the general public.
