The Department of Surgery, Division of Urology is inviting applications for a full-time Contract Academic Staff (Research) faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The academic appointment will be within the Department of Surgery, with an affiliation in the Departments of Microbiology & Immunology and Oncology. This is a Contract Academic Staff position and does not confer eligibility for tenure.

The department is seeking a junior scientist to become part of a translational research team currently comprised of three basic scientists, three clinician-scientists, and a genitourinary pathologist with a focus on bladder cancer biology. This urologic oncology team is part of the Cancer Research Program of the MUHC Research Institute. The selected candidate will be expected to establish a unique and competitive translational research program with a strong focus in bladder cancer biology, immunology and immunotherapy.

Job Duties

The successful candidate will perform translational research and supervise and support students in their research. Primary activities will involve initiating a competitive, independently funded bladder cancer research program that will integrate and synergize with the already existing urologic oncology research teams, as well as foster collaborations among other researchers (including the Goodman Cancer Institute, McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) Oncology Group, and/or Centre of Excellence in Translational Immunology), as well as clinicians of the urology team. The successful applicant will be involved in teaching activities, including lecturing and the supervision of both undergraduate and post-graduate students. The candidate will be expected to develop their own independent research career and be successful in obtaining grants in support of his or her research and salary.

McGill faculty members are expected to contribute to service activities within their units, the University, and the wider scholarly community. A demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion is also expected.

Candidates must:

  • hold a PhD in a relevant field with training and experience in immunology;
  • have additional post-doctoral training;
  • be a creative scientist with translational research experience in the innate or adaptive immune system with applications to the pathogenesis of cancer, progression to metastatic disease, or therapeutic response in cancer patients or pre-clinical cancer models;
  • demonstrate a scientific track record, as evidenced by publications and peer-reviewed presentations in scientific meetings.
  • demonstrate the interpersonal skills required for effective teamwork.

Consideration will be given to candidates with previous experience in bladder cancer research as well as expertise in immuno-oncology. Experience in bioinformatics is a plus. Leadership experience in a research context is an asset.
